Vanatoa Farm is located in Koguva Village, which is one of the most authentic fishing villages on Muhu Island and whose history dates back to 1532.
Koguva Village is the best-preserved village ensemble in Estonia (100 buildings, about 20 permanent residents), with a unique environment created by village streets bordering on stone walls, log houses with thatched-roofs, ancient trees, and wells with sweeps.
HISTORY
Vanatoa Farm has been one of the wealthiest farms in Muhu throughout the ages. It was established by Jaan Schmuul (1858-1939), who was initially the foreman of the construction work and later also a subcontractor during the construction of the dam connecting Muhu and Saaremaa (1894-1896).
Most of the buildings date back to the 19th century, but there are also a few from the 18th century located in the middle of the village. Our famous and beloved writer Juhan Smuul was born in Koguva Village. Like the other residents of Koguva’s free farms, the people of Vanatoa were given the surname Schmuul in the early 19th century (also Shmul in earlier documents).
MAIN BUILDING
The main building, dating from 1887, has a total area of 632.0 m² and the area under the building is 524 m².
The building has a beautiful thatched roof and a total of 11 rooms with amenities and modern furnishings. A total of 24 beds, including a disabled room and toilet for wheelchair users.
On floor I, there is a bar with a fireplace, the largest party hall on Muhu Island, and a freshly renovated kitchen.
There are 7 rooms for guests, six of them for two and one for three people.
On floor II, there are four rooms, three of them for two people and one for three people. In addition to the bedrooms, there is also an electric infrared sauna and a conference room on floor II.
All comfortably furnished rooms have a shower and toilet.
BARN HOUSE
The total area of the barn house is 93.6 m² and the area under the building is 125.1 m². The Vanatoa Barn House has received a beautiful fresh look and offers a pleasant interior for the holidaymaker with all its amenities. The Barn House has 4 rooms with 29 beds in total. Bunk beds are used. Each room has a shower and a toilet.
SAUNA HOUSE
The total area of the sauna house is 102.0 m² and the area under the building is 122.3 m².
The sauna house has thick limestone walls and a large front room. In the centre of the sauna house, there is a beautiful fireplace and a long dining table. Wood heating is used in the sauna. There is one room on floor I and two bedrooms on floor II above the sauna.
There are a total of 5 beds in the sauna house.
FISHING NET SHED
The total area of the building is 62.0 m².
The total area of the building with a thatched roof, renovated in 2007, is 62.0 m² and the area under the building is 95.9 m². The building has 2 spacious rooms, which are perfect for a family holiday. It is possible to accommodate up to 11 visitors in the house at a time. Washing facilities and toilets are located in the adjacent building, about 10 m away across the yard.
P.S. The buildings underwent a major renovation 10 years ago. In the winter of 2020, the entire heating system was updated and the water filtration system was replaced. In May 2021, a comprehensive electrical audit was carried out. The kitchen was modernised in 2019 and the exterior finish was updated in 2022.
