Building history
The building at Suur‑Karja 18 was designed by architect Rudolf von Knüpffer and completed in 1886. Originally it housed Julius Tusti’s piano factory. In 1917–1918 the building contained the premises of the Tallinn Workers’ House. In the early 1920s the building was rebuilt from three to six storeys according to architect Artur Perna’s design and taken into use as the AS Laenupank building. It housed Eesti Laenu Pank and Kinnitusselts Eesti Union, and the ground-floor commercial spaces included cafés. Today the ground floor with arched windows hosts commercial premises, while the upper floors contain apartments.
